Cross-Border Coordination to Reduce IWT in the Guatemala-Mexico Green Corridor

The Project "Cross-Border Coordination to Reduce IWT in the Guatemala-Mexico Green Corridor" was implemented from May 2020 to October 2022 in the Mirador-Río Azul National Park at the Petén Department of Guatemala; and in coordination with rangers of the adjacent natural reserves of Calakmul and Balamku, of Campeche, Mexico.

This project had as its main objective the reduction illegal hunting, logging and trade of high commercial and ecosystemic value wildlife, observed on the border with Mexico.

Through this project the following central activities were implemented:

  • Strengthening patrolling and law enforcement in binational protected areas.
  • Increased awareness about the dynamics of Illegal Wildlife Traffic among the authorities of both countries.
  • Promote the effective application of existing legal frameworks and the prosecution of traffickers.
  • Evaluation of the potential of sustainable livelihood programs in Mexican communities exposed to trafficking.
  • Consolidation of a binational network for long-term cross-border collaboration.
