INSTITUTIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS
What we have dreamed during these 25 years, we have achieved and will keep on dreaming in order to achieve even more.
- FUNDAECO administers and supports the good management of more than 450,000 hectares of land in a national level.
- FUNDAECO has supported conservation processes and co-manager in more than 20 Protected Areas (existing and proposed), in six ecological priority regions (Caribbean, Cuchumatanes, CEM, Mayan Biosphere, South Coast, Trifinio)
- Through the work in Cerro San Gil and the Caribbean of Guatemala, FUNDAECO has acquired a unique experience in leading processes of co-manager of protected areas and has developed pilot models in participatory government matters of protected areas, community participation, land management, cadastral regulation and agrarian regularization, community eco-business, Environmental Services Payment, ecotourism, control and vigilance, environmental legislation application (complaint, litigation and environmental compensation) and environmental education.
- FUNDAECO has stablished a Network of more than 10 Institutional Ecological Reserves that contribute in a significant way to SIGAP and contain a high biodiversity, ecotourism and environmental services heritage.
- FUNDAECO implements co-management projects and supports the management of a 5 Municipal Regional Parks and 15 Community and Indigenous Reserves.
- FUNDAECO has been implementing the longest and more systematic monitoring program of birds in a hemispheric level, with more than 18 years of continuous monitoring and more than 40,000 banded specimens, and has a bird banding equipment integrated by local staff.
- FUNDAECO has assumed an important role in terms of coastal-marine conservation that includes the protection of coast ecosystems; reefs and seagrass monitoring, protection and restauration; fish farming and the sailing of the first marine investigation ship.
- FUNDAECO, together with MUSHNAT, has implemented a pilot effort of identification, monitoring and conservation of Amphibians AZE Sites for Guatemala and has stablished the first Reserve for Amphibians Conservation in the AZE Site of Sierra Caral.
- FUNDAECO has developed an important experience in deforestation monitoring and REDD Projects design and formulation; FUNDAECO has a strategic alliance with BNP-Paribas and the Althelia Fund, for the development of REDD initiatives in Guatemala and the north Region of Central America.
- FUNDAECO has developed an important experience in designing Metropolitan Ecologic Corridors, municipal land management plans and support to Municipal Environmental Management. Through the inclusion of Conservation Zones (GO) in the Land Management Plan of Guatemala City, has brought protection to more than 3,000 hectares of forest in ravines and hills of the Metropolitan Region.
- FUNDAECO has stablished working alliances and has aimed sustainable community development processes with more than 50 Associations and more than 150 local communities.
- FUNDAECO has stablished Four formal working Consortiums for the Co-management of protected areas with the same number of indigenous territorial associations.
- FUNDAECO has supported the legalization of more than 20,000 hectares of community land in more than 25 communities and has admitted more than 10,000 hectares of community forests to PINFOR and PINPEP Programs.
- FUNDAECO has stablished an “Ecotourism SME Financial Fund” and a “Support Fund to Small Community Productive Projects” that will allow consolidate eco-business and productive chains that create employment and income in their focused protected areas.
- FUNDAECO has assumed a pioneering role in Sexual and Reproductive Health –SSR by its initials in Spanish- in rural communities of their focusing regions and is creating a 20 SSR Clinic Network to attend more than 60 communities established in protected areas of institutional approach.
- FUNDAECO is a Member of different Environmental Networks and Consortiums of Civil Society, through which its supports important incidence, civil complaints and legislative lobbying processes.
- FUNDAECO has developed an important experience related to impact in policies and lobbying of environmental laws, and is the entity that HAS PRESENTED MORE DECLARATORY LAWS to the Congress of the Republic.
- FUNDAECO has consolidated an Institutional Structure equipped with administrative, technical, human, financial, property and organizational resources that make it a CONAP and SIGAP Strategic Partner.
- FUNDAECO has constructed a wide institutional trajectory in the Environment Defense Sector in Guatemala and has high credibility in both national and international levels. In 2007 we were awarded with the BBVA Foundation Prize to the “Best Project of Biodiversity Conservation in Latin America” and in 2010 we received the Alstom Prize to Nature Conservation.
