Magdalena Lagoon

Chiantla, Huehuetenango

Location

Beautiful lagoon located in the village of Magdalena, Chancol, Chiantla, Huehuetenango. The color of the water is of different shades of blue and green, which contrasts with the beautiful wooded landscape of the surrounding mountains.

Because it is located nearly 3,000 meters above sea level, the climate is cold. This is the ideal site to appreciate stunning scenery of the Guatemalan highlands. You can reach the lagoon walking about 15 minutes, along a path where you can see small rivers, streams and even waterfalls of crystalline waters.

The climate is cold and humid, thus we suggest you to be prepared with appropriate clothing. To enjoy this visit completely, you can camp or stay in some cabins managed by the community. Food service is provided upon previous request.


Directions

It is located approximately 270 kilometers from the Guatemala City. The trip lasts for 7 hours and 30 minutes. Take CA-1 westbound. You will reach Huehuetenango and from there on you must take the road to Chiantla. You will pass Chiantla and drive in direction to Mirador Juan Dieguez Olaverri. You will find the lagoon´s access 20 kilometers from this point. Road signs will guide you through the route. When you reach the parking space, you must take a 15-minute walk to reach the lagoon. Food service will be at your disposal in the community when you arrive or if ordered to the contact phone number.
