Cayala Ecological and Sporting Park

Cayala Park has 34 acres mostly characterized by a natural forest where many species live such as birds, butterflies, rabbits, squirrels and others as well as an exquisite variety of flora. Also, the Contreras River runs through the park.

This par exemplifies the environmental characteristics of natural ravines within the capital city. This park has several natural trails, bridges and squares where you can walk or jog breathing pure air have fun in our sports area and spend a good field day, without leaving the city. This park is used by students to explore this “natural laboratory” and learn of its characteristics with environmental guides regarding topics relevant to ecology, the environment and issues that affect humans such as global warming.

You can do many activities at the park such as a personal visit or even an all-inclusive event for 200 people. We periodically have visits from universities, colleges, schools, community service organizations, religious groups, among others. Also, many social events take place here for families, businesses, training and camps.

During the weekends, many families come to spend time together and share picnic lunches and enjoy our climbing wall, just to mention one example. We hope to share with you and your friends the natural experience in the city soon.

Cayala Park Mission

Cayala is a model park that Fundaeco promotes as an environmental proposal in order to create a METROPOLITAN ECOLOGICAL BELT composed of all the ravines in the valley. This is a unique environmental experience within the city limits. This Metropolitan Ecological Belt allows, among other important things, the natural flow of water cycles because these ravines are the only sources of hydric reloading zones. Also, people can come to the park and exercise promoting health interacting with nature conservation and environmental education. This park is managed by Fundaeco with the support of the Sports Confederation of Guatemala.

Our mission is to recover and preserve a considerable sample of the original natural ecosystems of the valley of the capital city, promoting a culture of respect and love towards nature, through direct contact and active environmental education.

Cayala is a privileged destination for family recreation in a natural environment, providing quality of life, health and fresh air to the inhabitants of this metropolitan city.

Its adequate protection, management and sustainability will be a replicable model for other ravines of Guatemala City.

Cayala: Legal Status

The park is owned by the Sports Confederation of Guatemala. It is managed by Fundaeco in usufruct for 25 years (1996-2021).

Cayala: Economic Status

The entrance fee to the park is Q5.00 per person. Sources of income are comprised of rental activities involving lounges, awnings, panels, chairs, tables, tablecloths. Income is also raised by other activities such as rallies, ecological Olympics and business training seminars held at the park, restaurant service for events and collection of parking fees.

Currently, the park is self-sustainable on an 80% regarding its budget. It requires investments in awnings and furniture in order to avoid third party renting. It is also necessary to invest in an events room to achieve self-sustainability and become a donor of the Foundation. If the park gains profits, the Agreement states that 60% of said profits go to the Sports Confederation of Guatemala. At this time, the park has a total income of Q160, 000.00.
